Golf Performance Stats Analysis – Part 1: How To Improve Your Golf Handicap with TheGrint

Golf Performance Stats Analysis: How To Improve Your Golf Handicap with TheGrint

We are starting a Series of 3 Blog articles to help all the Grinters out there to better understand and utilize the Tools and information we offer to improve your Golf Game and lower your Handicap.

This is the 1st of those Series, we are calling it

Ball Striking – Tee to Green

Like you all know, we are all about improving the Golf Handicap. All we want to do is help you lower that Number to enjoy the Game much more and of course, brag about it. But in order for us (or any other Golfer out there) to improve that Index, you have to know where you are missing, what are your weaknesses and practice those areas to get better.

Now, with TheGrint it is pretty easy to know where your weaknesses are and where you miss the most. All you have to do is track your Score and Stats every time you go out to play and after a few Scores and information you have in your Profile, you will be able to see the Stats and see what you are good at and where you are not.

So, how do you track your golf handicap and golf stats?

Pretty easy. With TheGrint App just track your Score, your Putts, your Hazards and the Tee Accuracy. That’s all we need from you in order for us to give you enough information about your Game; specifically, your weaknesses and strengths.

Today we are going to show you how you will be able to see one key information about one of the most important parts of your Golf Game: Greens in Regulation %.

Here’s an example on how your Golf Stats will look like (after you have Scores uploaded) and how you can improve your Game with this information.

 App:

Website

My Golf Handicap is 4.8 and these are my real Stats (if you were wondering…)

Personally, these stats are the ones I use the most to learn about my Game because I can put them together by saying: After hitting the Fairway (on Par 4’s and Par 5’s) my GIR% is 56%, which is not that bad… But how do I use that information?

The first thing is to compare to other golfers in my handicap range (using the Rank Option or the Trends sections on TheGrint Website) to check whether that number is good or bad.  In my case, it is actually above average. So I am good in that area, Now what?

Let’s check where I need to improve on… If you see on the other Screenshot (on the App) you will see that on Par 4’s I Hit the Green in Regulation 39% (hitting the Fairway or not), meaning that my problem must be that whenever I miss the Fairway on Par 4’s, I miss badly and it is really hard to Hit the GIR. So if I can improve my Driving Accuracy and leave me with easier shots to the Green, I would hit more greens and shoot better scores.

On the other hand, on Par 5’s I hit the GIR 53% (wether I hit the Fairway or Not with my Tee Shot) but because it is a Par 5, usually when I miss the Fairway with my Tee Shot, I focus on getting back to the Fairway so I can still hit the GIR; that’s why my stats on GIR% on Par 5’s are much Higher than the ones on Par 4’s; and of course this also has to do with the Yardages I leave myself to the Green on Par 5’s in comparison to Par 4’s.

With this information you are able to see on which Holes you need to focus more or, practice harder on something specific. I personally know that, even though I miss my Tee Shots badly, my real problem is the Iron game. I should be able to hit the GIR more often on Par 4’s, regardless of where I end up with my Tee Shot.

Ultimately, my Goal of Hitting more Fairways and GIR will allow me to Putt for Birdies more often, Score better and get my Handicap Lower.

Every Golfers’ Dream… I hope this information helps and remember to keep track of your Stats. It really helps!

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this 3 Part Series of Articles…

    Thanks for the explanation of good use of stats. Keep them coming, please. After all, that is best feature of the Grint. Using stats to understand where to improve is best approach. Great service

    Where is this rank option to see how you compare to others with similar handicaps? I don’t see a rank button anywhere.

    • Hi Dave, good morning. Thank you for contacting us. The Rank Option is on the Website and the App.

      For the Website follow these steps:
      1. Login
      2. Click on the Green Circle where your Handicap is shown (on the home page).
      3. You can click on each Circle to Sort the Ranking depending on the Handicap, Score, Putts or GIR%.

      On the App follow these steps:
      1. Login
      2. Click on Rank
      3. Then the same as on the Website. Tap on the Green Circle to sort the Ranking depending on what you want to See on the Ranking.

      You can contact us directly to contactus@thegrint.com if you have any questions.

      Have a great day!

  4. It’s not clear to me how to compare my stats against other golfers with similar handicaps. It says to use the “Rank Option or the Trends sections”. Can you explain what this is?

    • Hi Tony, good morning. Thank you for your feedback. We would be happy to explain this.

      First, the Ranking Feature is here:

      For the Website follow these steps:
      1. Login
      2. Click on the Green Circle where your Handicap is shown (on the home page).
      3. You can click on each Circle to Sort the Ranking depending on the Handicap, Score, Putts or GIR%.

      On the App follow these steps:
      1. Login
      2. Click on Rank
      3. Then the same as on the Website. Tap on the Green Circle to sort the Ranking depending on what you want to See on the Ranking.

      All you have to do is get the information from the Ranking of the Person you want to compare your Stats with. After you see who you want to compare your Stats with, you go to the Trends Section on the Website. Then select the Stat you want to check, get your Stats (write them down on a Paper or somewhere so you don’t forget your Stats), then type the Name of the person you want to compare your Stats with (there is an option on the Top Left below your Name that says “Change Golfer”) and after you type his/her name, you will see his/her stats on the Stat you selected before.

      Hopefully this helps.

      Let us know if you have any other question. You can contact us directly through contactus@thegrint.com and remember that this is just the 1st Blog of 3 series we have coming up, so stay tuned for the other 2.

      Have a great day!

      • Tony

        Thank you for that explanation. That makes sense to me. The key is that you can only see the stats for people you are friends with on the Grint. Unfortunately, none of my friends have a handicap that I’m jealous of 🙂 It would be great if I could see the statistics of random 9 handicap or something like that.

        • Hi Tony, thank you for getting back to us.
          Yes! That is a great feedback. We are going to discuss this and see what we can do about it. We appreciate your support.

          • Dave

            This is what I was looking for. Compare my stats to others with a similar handicap. My handicap is lower than the guys on my friends list. That would be a great addition. I love all the stats though. I was doing this myself for years on a spreadsheet. But this is a lot easier. One add I world like to see is on the shots into the green add “on Fringe” as a option besides short, long, left, right. You might have a couple holes a round where you are putting and not chipping which is a little different than a complete miss even though it is not a GIR, most golfers are better witht he putter in their hand. I call them Puttable Greens. It’s a stat a track for myself. You might have a day where you hit 5 GIR, but another 4 you Putted from the fringe. It gives you a little insight how bad your misses are.

          • Hi Dave! Thank you for your comment and your feedback! We appreciate it! We will take your feedback into consideration and see what we can do to Add that Stat or a similar one to our App and Stats.
            Thanks again.

  5. Edward Devlin

    I really like the stats section of the app/website and I was wondering if I could compare my stats to all Grinters (names not needed) with a 24.4 hcp? I believe this would be really useful.

  6. Luis Sanchez

    I need to understand the handicap calculation, I have been playing my best golf recently and I have my worst handicap????? I play in El Encanto in El Salvador, I understand that there should be a max hits per hole indicated by the club and that is what it is considered to do the calculations, but I don’t know which is that maximum. If I average my best 10 scores out of my last 20 days of golf, and compare it with the course par, I should be around 21 handicap and The Grint says I am 26???? Really I need to understand this because The Grint is making me and other players look like cheaters!!!!

    Please explain me this.

  7. Brett

    During a round when you are entering your score for the hole, what do all the abbreviations mean in the hazards tab?

    • Hi Bret, good afternoon,

      Thank you for contacting us.

      We would be happy to help you out.

      Regarding the Penalties, here are the Meanings:

      S = Greenside Sand
      F = Fairway Sand
      W = Water Hazard
      O = Out of Bounds
      D = Drop Shot
      SS means that you hit the Greenside Sand twice.
      FF means that you hit the Fairway Sand twice.
      DD means that you had to drop the ball twice (because of unplayable or anything like that).
      FS means that you hit the Fairway Sand and then the Greenside Bunker.

      OS means that you hit it Out of Bounds and then you hit it into the Greenside Bunker.

      And so forth.

      Let us know if you have any other question.

      Regards,
